Heaven is for Real – Todd Burpo

May 19, 2011

This is a fascinating exploration into the true story of a 4 years old trip to heaven. Todd, a pastor and Sonja, his wife, are your typical loving parents of two young children, a girl Cassie and younger boy Colton. During a family trip, Colton gets terribly ill and is taken to the hospital were he struggles, near death, with a horrible infection. During his time in surgery, Colton had an experience where he went to heaven. During his visit he says he spent time with Jesus, saw G-d, and got to know John the Baptist as well as family members that had long since passed away. As you can imagine Colton’s parents were quite skeptical of Colton’s experience, however the more they talked to him they became convinced that everything he was saying he experienced really did

happen. I am sure as a reader you will be very skeptical of a 4 years old story as

quite interesting and with a background set in Paris, what was not to

enjoy?

The book is historical fiction, written from the point of view of his wife Hadley. The two meet and marry young and quickly start their life together in a foreign country, with very little money in the early 1920’s. The time period is fascinating and reading about all their travels and vacations within Europe are so vivid you feel you are there with them. But don’t let the beauty of Europe fool you…Hemingway was a tortured soul, living with a lot of demons, especially after his time served as a young man in the war. There is a lot of drinking and hardship for this young couple as Ernest tries to make a name for himself. Now that I have an inside look at Hemingway and his life, I am anxious to read The Sun Also Rises. The Paris Wife shows how he came to write the book which includes his own personal experiences as well as the friends he was with at the time which we have learned about and seen through The Paris Wife. I will say this is a steady story, not much of a page turner, but enjoyable none the less. Contemporary Literature)

Firstly, I really

The author, Carlos Aleman, an independent author started to follow me on Twitter, so buy viagra I then in turn checked out who he was and went to his website. I saw that order viagra he was an author and went on to see what he had written and black market viagra read the reviews. All the reviews on Amazon were great, so I of course wanted to check out the book, especially at the low cialis lowest price price of $2.99. long term effects of viagra I have to agree with the other reviewers, this is a great story. I was pulled in immediately by the young characters Cara and her brother Alex and their family situation. The story is a simple one, filled with love and heartbreak. Yet through the unexpected relationship with their Uncle Diego (who is the most amazing man) they are able to heal their heartache and find and follow their passions in life. I don’t know what it is about

this book but http://viagraincanada-onlinerx.com/ I really felt for these characters and oddly still do. The story will make you smile and make you cry but in the end you will feel good about what you just read. I recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother – Amy Chua

battle-hymnThere was a lot of controversy surrounding this book since the day it came out. I had read all about this Chinese mom and how she disciplined her two daughters. I read about her in People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today and in several other places, and based on all the hoopla, I ran out and got the book! Honestly, the book was pretty much what I had expected and I really liked it. In fact the differences between the Chinese parenting model and our parenting model are quite fascinating. I am a mom of two elementary school age children and yes I fall right into the model. I do not push too hard, I am a bit lax with discipline and follow through, and I am OK for my children to not be “the best”. For me it is important that they do their best and try their hardest. It is important for me to keep their self esteem at a high and it is important that they enjoy their childhood and enjoy being kids. Well according to Amy Chau that is just not necessary or OK. For her (and many Chinese families) being the best and not second best is the #1 most important thing. Being second best is as big a failure as being in the middle or last. An A- is not good enough and she (as well as other Chinese parents ) demand the best and will do what ever it takes to make their children the best. This includes no play dates, no sleepovers and hours and hours literally of practicing, whether it be on a musical instrument, learning Chinese, or school work. Now I have to say what she went through to get her children to achieve these results were not easy. There would be endless hours of fighting an screaming until the work got done and done to her expectations – The BEST.There were not even breaks during family vacations when they were travelling all over the world. As you can imagine this was not a pleasant experience for anyone involved, including both of Amy’s daughters, Sophia and Lulu as well as her unbelievably supportive Jewish husband and Amy herself..

Although her parenting techniques couldn’t be more opposite of mine, I found her techniques and commitment to her daughters, family and heritage fascinating.

I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed it a lot, even though I was shaking my head along the way in disbelief.

gushing and tell you a bit about this book. This is another World War II story but instead of the European side of the war which I mostly read about, this is the first book I have read about the Japanese – United States side. The story centers around the life of Louis Zamperini. The story starts out with Louis as a boy. He is quite the little delinquent of the neighborhood, stealing, fighting, bullying. Finally as a teenager, with guidance from his brother, he puts all that negative boy energy into running and he discovers that he can push his body faster then literally most everyone. However, right in the middle of his training and dreams of the Olympics, the war breaks out and Louis heads to the Air

Force. He was trained as a bombardier and was sent to Hawaii to fight. What happens from there will over and over again leave you shocked and shaken. I think I would gasp out loud as I was reading. Through all that Louis endures he remains as the title says so perfectly – Unbroken. I know that sounds corny but once you read this book you will understand. Louis, as well as all the other men in his crew, and those who fought in World War II and are still fighting, are truly the most amazing men and women. I urge you to read this book and learn about this incredible man and his incredible life. This book is truly a story of “survival, resilience, and redemption”.

roomThis is all of our worst nightmares as parents come true. A seventeen year old girl is kidnapped and held captive and thought of as dead to all her family and friends. She

It does take a few chapters to get used to his way of talking but then it all clicks and he is easy to follow and understand. Although Room is just an eleven foot by eleven foot space, it is Jack’s home and all he knows. He doesn’t even know anything else exists outside Room except outer space. Jack’s ma has created a life for him and her creativity keflex and flagyl for diverticulitis under these circumstances is incredible. The story reminded me of the true story of Jaycee Dugard and her children and what they must have been enduring throughout all their years of confinement. This is a story of the strongest bond of love between a mother and her son, and a story of survival in the most unimaginable circumstance . I really enjoyed this book.
